The built environment sector accounts for around 38% of all energy-related carbon emissions worldwide. This course explores how net zero carbon can be achieved through optimised building design, sustainable material selections, and efficient construction. This is the first course in the Climate Curriculum CPD series, designed in partnership with Climate Framework. It is relevant to all built environment professionals as part of the sector’s drive towards net zero carbon emissions. 25 hours. Free. Available anytime.

This book explains how to reform the anti-ecological biases in our current frameworks of environmental governance, planning, decision making and design – and suggests how to make these changes. Cities can increase both the ‘public estate’ (reduce social stratification, inequity and other causes of conflict, increase environmental quality, wellbeing and access to basic needs, etc.); and the ‘ecological base’ (sequester more carbon and produce more energy than used during construction and operation, increase ecological space to support ecological carrying capacity, ecosystem functions and services, restore the bioregions and wilderness, etc.).

Residents of compact neighbourhoods are significantly more satisfied with their personal relationships compared with residents of low-density suburban neighbourhoods. Shorter distances to the city centre, higher densities, and mixed land uses are found to positively contribute to overall social well-being. Compact urban forms enable residents to maintain larger networks of close relationships, socialise more frequently with friends and family, receive stronger social support, and enjoy increased opportunities to make new acquaintances.

Outcomes relating to social interaction and group participation tend to improve as density rises up to a medium level, around 100 – 140 DPM (net), and then fall off at higher levels Outcomes relating to the use of local services are positively related to density and contributes to greater sustainability in terms of travel and transport, which itself displays a similar pattern over density.
